    • I know, I know, It's really popular right now to shit all over Nintendo's new online program. But that's not what I'm here for. In fact, I think it's pretty good. I'm here to set the record straight.

Nintendo Switch Online is only $20 USD for an individual membership, and way less if you split the cost of a family membership. For a third of the price of its competitors (at the most), I don't really care what else NS Online has to offer. I can play my games online, and I can do it for cheaper than PS4 or XB1 users can.

It gave us designated servers for MK Deluxe and, later on, Smash Bros, and while, for some reason, Splatoon 2 didn't, I never really noticed connection issues while playing. Peer-to-peer isn't really bad at all, unless your friends have really bad connections. And most of the third party games we play don't have designated servers anyways.

You also get a pretty cool ever - expanding library of NES games, which is an added bonus. Now, I get that this is a shitty replacement for virtual console, and that many people have bought these games many times and might not want to buy them again, the library comes at no additional cost with an online service that is already affordable.

Some people seem to think that charging customers for online is a crummy thing to do, but these companies want to make money. It sucks, but when you have an additional service for a product, it's a bad business strategy not to charge.

The only legitimate problem I have with NS Online is the voice chat. Only Fortnite supports it without the use of your phone, and even then you need a wired mic. For me, this is a big let-down because I think it's something that can easily be fixed. All Nintendo have to do is release a wired-to-Bluetooth audio port adapter, which I've found on Amazon for $16, and release a software update. If you're someone who really wants voice chat to communicate with teammates, the price is more than justifiable. Using your phone is really clunky and definitely not an option.

That being said, as the title of this topic indicates, I really do believe you get what you pay for. When you're paying $2-20 a year for online, I can move past these things. I think the real reason we're all complaining is the Osborne effect. I think Nintendo advertised the fact that we would have to pay for online service way too early. I was ready to pay for this a year ago. I was ready to pay for this in January. But the truth is, we all got comfortable with playing online for free and how well it worked. We all took it for granted as something that shouldn't be monetized and when the time came to pony up, it took us by surprise.

I'm really interested in knowing what the general consensus is with this, who bought it and who won't. Feel free to leave us your opinions, and who knows? Maybe this'll help some people that are on the fence to go either way.

    • Sony announced its Playstation Classic today and somewhat surprisingly I have been reading some threads of people who are not at all excited by this. Now, I am a Playstation man, through and through, so my opinion may be somewhat biased, but overall I really like the idea of the retro mini console and having it stocked with games. Older consoles, controllers, and especially game carts and discs become worn and useless as time goes on. Experiencing older games on a crisp new screen with responsive brand new controllers sounds great to most of us, but to many it will never live up to the original experience of untangling the controller cords, blowing the dust from your cartridge and switching the TV input over to RGB. I totally see both sides of the argument and I think that these retro consoles are not for everyone. I had serious plans to purchase the SNES Classic but never got around to it and now it seems as though many of those games I would've bought it for will end up on the Switch at some point anyways. Even the PS Classic is kind of lost on me now considering Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, 10, 10-2, and 12 will all be out on the Switch soon. So what do you all think?

    • Hello fellow Radarians! It has been a while since I have posted anything new so I figured.... I would do exactly that! This post concerns my newest obsession: Hollow Knight. Man, oh man. What a game this is! I am a major metroidvania fan, so games like Axiom Verge and Owlboy already appeal to me, and Hollow Knight is no different. There isn't a ton to mention as far as what makes this game special to me or stand out in a major way, but it is special and it does stand out. I like everything about this game. The art style is simple and unique. The gameplay is very simple and easy to handle, however, the enemies and bosses are anything but. This game challenges me in the same way I am challenged by a Dark Souls title. You fight, you die. You fight again, you die again. You try and level up, return to fight, die again. It's really a smashing good time. Something about the lore of the story has me drawn in as well. This underground kingdom of bugs, that has this tragic and mysterious past, is tons of fun to explore and master, searching every nook and cranny for new things. The other bugs you meet all have distinct and engaging personalities and voice acting, although they are speaking "bugish" and we cannot understand them without reading the text on screen, that somehow just fits perfectly and sounds right 100% of the time. My favorite bug voice is of the cartographers wife, Iselda, and her bored sounding sigh of "bafanada..." This game is hard as hell and super engaging. I highly recommend it for its playability and the way it translates from big screen to handheld. Some metroidvania games are best viewed on a smaller screen(Axiom Verge is a great example of this; on my 66" screen the game looks silly), but that does not apply to Hollow Knight. I love the way it looks on my TV and it is perfect and cozy in handheld mode. I bought this game while it was on sale for around $8 and I had a few hundred points, too. It cost me maybe $5 in the end and I have enjoyed it far more than Octopath Traveler(which I was SUPER excited for) that I paid $59.99 for.

    • So now that Smash Ultimate has been announced and EVERY SINGLE Smash fighter ever (and some extras) are a part of the roster, I'm curious to find out who everyone's main might be.

Personally, I'm excited to try out Little Mac now that air dodges improve recovery. I hope that might help to balance out his attacks without occasionally falling off the map with no control whatsoever. I also want to try out the Ice Climbers and how their two-in-one combo fares against some of the newer fighters.

Hey guys and girls!

Hope you like the new site as much as I do! As always I love you guys 'n' girls and I'm super fortunate to have such an awesome small community! I haven't been around as much as I could have this past year and I'm sorry :( A 'rare Buzz has appeared' will no longer be the running joke I hope! xD;)

I want to express how grateful I am to those of you who've stuck by our community (even when things were slow) - posting news, reviews, replying to messages and threads. Believe it or not I do come on every day and see the things you guys post! and I am blessed you choose to come on and and hang out and share your love of Nintendo, gaming and other things. So again, a HUGE thanks to all our members and especially some of our Radar family who have and continue to help other users out with kindness and patience - @MrMischief @JNASTY @Jonny B. Goode @Potatogun @Linkk @Fiscusand @Diego7000 (just to name a few).

So yes, you'll notice a lot has changed. We'll be missing some features but gaining new ones. The new software has more useful community-minded features baked into the core software which will mean we wont be reliant on a bunch of 3rd party plugins that would cripple our site if we ever updated (that's why things didn't change too often on the first site). So I'll be trying to keep the website as close to vanilla as I can to ensure the site stays up-to-date as often as possible.

A have a lot planned in the roadmap for NintendoRadar 2.0 and big ambitions! I'm talking merchandise, giveaways, developer AMA's, Youtube and Social Channels, paid freelance writers?, events and lots more! A big part of this will be tied to Patreon - which will allow users on the site to pledge money towards our patreon campaign which will grant them LOADS of exclusive perks around the site, increased odds in giveaways and in -turn fund the site, fund all the stuff I mentioned above and help us grow! More information on Patreon coming soon so stay tuned!

As for new features, there's quite a few! We're not enabling everything 'just yet' because I want to make sure everything rolls out smoothly! But here's just some  of what's working and some of what's in the pipleline!

  • *New* Dynamic Topics List Homepage - Our homepage now has an endless feed of all the recent topics from across all the different forums on the site (differentiated by their little colored tags) you can even filter out what forums you want to see topics from (or you can leave them all unchecked and see everything at once). You can also switch back to a more traditional 'forum-view' if that's what you prefer by clicking one of the little buttons at the top right :  Screen Shot 2018-02-19 at 04.15.08.png The idea here is that it'll be easier than ever to find new posts and threads!

  • Calendar - This will be a really fun new addition to the site and we plan on adding events, game release dates and more! Users will be able to signal their interest in new games, discuss and review games/events! There's a lot packed into the calendar (feature wise) just take a look at a game release date event I added! Just pasting a link to the event page in the post editor adds a widget like this:
We've also got a sidebar widget showcasing upcoming game releases! There's so many neat tricks I can't possibly cover it all.

  • 'Our Picks' Page - This page will showcase staff curated content from across the site - from news, to videos, threads, images, .... and more! This will help us get your best content put up there in the spotlight and this will eventually become our homepage! Check out the 'Our Picks' page either by clicking the link on the menu or by clicking here: https://nintendoradar.com/ourpicks/

  • Activity - The activity dropdown in the main menu includes the 'All Activity' Discover page and more that allows you to see a complete feed of what's been going on in the forum! From profile ...., new members, likes, .... and more!

  • A New Chatbox - Yup we've kept the chatbox, it's simple and clean! We'll also be adding really cool GIPHY support soon but we do also plan on embracing Discord at some point in the near future! Stay tuned!

  • Leaderboard - Can you top the leaderboards by being an active member of the community and posting content? A fun thing to check now and then: https://nintendoradar.com/leaderboard/

  • A flashy new profile page - You can really customise your profile and make it your own by adding a 'cover photo'!  Here's mine:

    Screen Shot 2018-02-19 at 04.46.18.png

  • Lot's more around the site, I'll let you fine people look around and see what you think! If you have any questions always feel free to hit me up!

Features Coming Soon:

  • Patreon Integration & VIP Usergroup - You'll be able to connect your Patreon account to your NintendoRadar account and when you pledge - you'll automatically be upgraded to a special premium user tier unlocking new features on the site (like signatures, create clubs, use the image gallery, photo gallery, advertisements, username decoration, create your own blog here on the site etc!) You'll also fund the site and pave the way towards more giveaways, features and expansion!

  • Clubs - Think of this as a bit like Facebook Groups/Reddit Subreddits. Patreon supporters, staff and some 'special' members will be able to create, manage, decorate and moderate their own 'Club Group' which will essentially be a little exclusive forum/news outlet/section of the site. People will be able to join your club, interact and post topics etc...  We foresee many game, hobby, sport and tv related clubs being made!

  • Blogs - Patreon supporters, staff and more will be able to create their own REAL blog within NintendoRadar! Whether it's to get stuff off your mind, to share news or get feedback - blogs will be a great addition to the site!

  • Gallery - Patreon supporters will be able to create their own image galleries to host images, load memes and anything you want!

  • Emoji Support - Yep, emojis will come to the site at some point. REAL EMOJIS!

  • More features will be announced over time, we're really excited about all the possibilities!

If you made it to the end, I take my hat off to you! Nintendo Radar will be changing and getting better! It wont happen overnight, but things and times are changing!

Thank you for being a member and being part of the community. YOU make this place great! Stay tuned.

I'm liking the new site. I noticed you don't have any pinned messages or categories to filter posts so maybe include that. I always thought it would be really cool if forum sites like this one would promote interaction with a gimic like character profiles, building a character with items farmed by posting .... and new topics. Just an idea :). Also good luck to everyone on that eshop giveaway!

Hey RosPlays, thanks for the awesome post! That would be a really cool way to encourage users to post and come back to the site, I'll look into it!

As for the first part of your message - there is a way to filter posts from certain forums on the right. You leave them all unticked if you want to see all posts, or you can tick the boxes and Filter them:

Screen Shot 2018-02-19 at 08.57.45.png

You can also click those little icons next to the 'Start new topic' button to switch between this list style or a more traditional 'forums' area where everything is fully separated! :)

Thanks my friend! and good luck.

It's p cool but you really missed a trick in that email, you could have put "it's a site to behold" instead of "it's a sight to behold" and it would have been a top quality pun. Other than that disappointment, it's good.

Aww damnit, why didn't I think of that xD a potential pun well spotted! I should never write emails or long posts after staying up 26 hours and consuming a giant bottle of redbull O.o

Thanks for the nice post though, and congrats on joining (again?). Good luck! :D

You're a very astute individual huh, the favicon of all things is the one thing I forgot to add when migrating the site over. *doh* Thanks for reminding me.

Cant say if the site is better or not already however from a glance it defiantly looks more polished and professional. The red vibe also suits for the Nintendo theme what with Mario and all ;P

Early days but looks good also reminded me to come back as I dropped off awhile back since the threads were getting quiet and at once point some spam was making it's way in.

Hopefully that will have been resolved by now.

I think the new look is slick and totally wicked, BUt Ive only been here for a short time, and time will tell, caelndar features with releases will be awesome even though its hard to miss if you subscribe to nintendo on youtube and other channels there and also check out the nintendo e-shop. But the more reminders the better to a certain extent because you dont want to miss those games you really want to grab the first day.

Fiscus!! I was about to add you to my list of mentions in the post with everyone else but got distracted - lemme do that now xD. You are one of my favorite peeps. Oh, premium is definitely on the horizon. I paid a pretty penny for a developer to create a patreon plugin that lets people connect their patreon to the site and syncs their pledge data so they'll be upgraded to premium automatically. Patreon is a great service for supporting communities and will make things much easier for me.

You'll warm up to it Diego, I am glad you made it to the end of the thread xD It took me a while to type it up. There's so much more to the site I couldn't cover it all. As for the reactions - yup I'll be adding more custom nintendo themed reactions also to spice things up a bit ;) Thanks for being a part of the community Diego!
